About Al Stieglitz
Albert Harrell Stieglitz signed out of the University of Georgia with the New York Giants organization, breaking into pro ball in 1953 with the Class D Pauls Valley Raiders, where the left-handed-hitting catcher hit .319. He advanced to Danville of the Carolina League in 1954, then hit .314 in Class A the next year before two seasons away from the game serving in the Navy. Stieglitz returned in 1958 with Double-A Corpus Christi and reached the Triple-A Phoenix Giants in 1959, batting .279 with seven homers — enough to land him in the 1960 Topps set as a Sport Magazine Rookie Star, now recognized as his rookie card. The card back explained a broken leg had cost him a shot at cracking the Giants' roster that year. San Francisco instead sent him back to Double-A Rio Grande Valley in 1960, where he hit 10 home runs but batted .243 in what proved to be his final professional season.
