About Julio Navarro
Julio Navarro Ventura, a right-hander from Vieques, Puerto Rico, signed with the San Francisco Giants organization and spent years working through their farm system before his 1960 Topps card arrived as part of the Sport Magazine Rookie Star subset — a recognized rookie card despite Navarro still being two years from his major-league debut. The Giants ultimately sent him to the Los Angeles Angels on September 2, 1962; he debuted the next day, striking out Roger Maris, and beat the Yankees in his second appearance. His best season came in 1963, when he teamed with Art Fowler in the Angels' bullpen, ranking among the American League's top ten in games, saves, and games finished while going 4-5 with a 2.89 ERA. Known in Puerto Rico as "El Látigo" — Whiplash — for his sidearm fastball, he later pitched for Detroit and Atlanta, finishing with a 7-9 record over six seasons. His minor-league and winter-ball career stretched more than two decades; son Jaime Navarro pitched in the majors from 1989-2000.
