About Danny O'Connell
Danny O'Connell broke into pro ball in 1946 with the Class D Bloomingdale Troopers, signed by Brooklyn Dodgers scout Clyde Sukeforth. Sold to Pittsburgh, he debuted in July 1950 and hit .292, finishing third in NL Rookie of the Year voting before two years of Army service in the Korean War. Back with the Pirates in 1953, he batted .294 and drew MVP votes, prompting Milwaukee to deal six players and $100,000 for him. Shifted to second base, he held the job three-plus seasons until the Braves finally landed Red Schoendienst, sending O'Connell, Bobby Thomson and Ray Crone to the Giants in June 1957 - a deal that fueled Milwaukee's championship run. With the Giants' 1958 move to San Francisco, shown here on his 1960 Topps card, O'Connell scored the first run in West Coast major-league history on Opening Day at Seals Stadium. He closed his career with Washington in 1961-62, leading the AL in sacrifice hits, then coached before dying young in a 1969 car accident.
