1960 Topps #262 Hank Bauer

About Hank Bauer
Henry Albert Bauer grew up the youngest of nine children in East St. Louis, Illinois, and signed with the Yankees' Class D club in Oshkosh in 1941 before enlisting in the Marine Corps a month after Pearl Harbor. He fought through Guadalcanal, Guam, and Okinawa, earning two Bronze Stars and two Purple Hearts; on Okinawa, only six of the 64 men in his platoon survived a Japanese counterattack that left him wounded by shrapnel. Bauer reached the Yankees in September 1948 and spent 12 seasons as a right fielder, often platooning with Gene Woodling, helping anchor five straight World Series titles from 1949-1953 under Casey Stengel. His bases-loaded triple and game-ending sliding catch closed out the 1951 Series, and he set a World Series record with a 17-game hitting streak spanning 1956-1958, homering off Warren Spahn in the 1958 finale. A three-time All-Star (1952-54), Bauer was dealt to the Kansas City Athletics after the 1959 season in the trade that sent Roger Maris to New York, closing out his playing days in Kansas City on this card. He later managed the Orioles to their first World Series title in 1966.
