About Darrell Johnson
Darrell Dean Johnson signed as an amateur free agent with the St. Louis Browns in 1949 after standing out in the California state amateur tournament, working up from Class D Redding to a big-league debut on April 20, 1952. A right-handed reserve catcher, he played six seasons in the majors with the Browns, White Sox, Yankees, Cardinals, Phillies, Reds and Orioles, batting .234. His 1960 Topps card catches him with St. Louis, the season he split between catching for the Cardinals and, after his August release as a player, coaching under Solly Hemus; when Hemus was fired the next July, Johnson was let go too, signed with the Phillies, and was sold to the pennant-bound Reds that August. He started twice in the 1961 World Series and singled twice off Hall of Famer Whitey Ford, having already won a ring as a Yankee reserve in 1958. His larger legacy came in the dugout: he managed the 1975 Red Sox to the American League pennant and a seven-game World Series against Cincinnati, earning Manager of the Year honors, then piloted the Seattle Mariners and Texas Rangers.
