About Bud Daley
A left-hander who threw a knuckleball to go with curves at two speeds, Leavitt Leo Daley was called "Bud" from birth — his mother, an only child, wanted a son like her cousin, Buddy Walker. Daley broke into the majors with Cleveland in 1955, signing with the Indians because of his friendship with pitcher Bob Lemon. Traded to Baltimore and then Kansas City in the spring of 1958, he developed into a workhorse for the Athletics, going 16-13 in 1959 and 16-16 in 1960 and earning back-to-back All-Star selections — the run pictured on this low-numbered #8 card, issued while he anchored Kansas City's rotation. In June 1961 the Athletics traded him to the Yankees for Art Ditmar and Deron Johnson, and Daley delivered immediately, picking up the win in Game Five to clinch that year's World Series over Cincinnati, then adding a second championship ring in 1962. He pitched a decade in the majors, finishing 60-64 with 549 strikeouts, and later settled in Riverton, Wyoming, where he died in 2024 at 92.
