About Hank Foiles
Henry Lee Foiles Jr. signed with the New York Yankees in 1947 and spent four minor-league seasons before Cincinnati took him in the 1951 Rule 5 draft. He debuted in the majors in 1953 and found his footing after a May 1956 trade sent him to the Pittsburgh Pirates, where he caught more than 100 games in both 1957 and 1958. His best season was 1957: a .270 average, a career-high 76 hits, and a berth on the National League All-Star team, where he delivered a pinch-hit single off Billy Pierce and scored a run in a rally that fell just short. Foiles was the first major leaguer to play in contact lenses, and he once threw out Jackie Robinson twice in one game. Pittsburgh dealt him to Kansas City that December to complete the Hal Smith trade, and his 1960 Topps card catches that stop — just six games as an Athletic before he was flipped back to Pittsburgh, then on to Cleveland and Detroit in the same season.
