About Lee Maye
Arthur Lee Maye broke into the majors with the Milwaukee Braves on June 17, 1959, launching a 13-season career that also took him to the Houston Astros, Cleveland Indians, Washington Senators, and Chicago White Sox. A left-handed-hitting outfielder out of Los Angeles' Jefferson High School, he signed with Milwaukee in 1954 and worked his way up through the farm system before winning the Braves' starting left-field job in 1961. His finest season came in 1964, when he set career highs with a .304 average, 153 games, 96 runs, and 74 RBIs while leading the National League with 44 doubles. He finished his career with a .274 average, 94 home runs, and 419 RBIs. Off the field, Maye led a genuine double life, recording as Arthur Lee Maye and the Crowns and singing behind Richard Berry on the original "Louie Louie." His 1960 Topps #246, pictured in a Braves uniform, is recognized as his rookie card.
