1960 Topps #512 Joe Gibbon

About Joe Gibbon
Joseph Charles Gibbon, a hard-throwing left-hander out of Hickory, Mississippi, arrived in the majors as a two-sport star — an All-American forward at Ole Miss who outscored Elgin Baylor and Wilt Chamberlain as a senior and was drafted by the Boston Celtics, only to choose baseball. He signed with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1957 and made the club's Opening Day roster in 1960, winning his first two big-league appearances in relief. Card #512, a short-printed 1960 Topps high number, captures his rookie season: a 4-2 mark for the pennant-winning Pirates, and relief work in Games 2 and 3 of their World Series upset of the Yankees, capped by Bill Mazeroski's Game 7 homer. His manager, Danny Murtaugh, tagged the quiet Gibbon with the ironic nickname 'Gabby.' Gibbon's best year came in 1961 (13-10, 3.32 ERA), and he pitched 13 big-league seasons — also for the Giants, Reds, and Astros — finishing 61-65 with 743 strikeouts before retiring in 1972.
