About Lou Clinton
Lou Clinton — born Luciean Louis Clinton in Ponca City, Oklahoma — signed with the Red Sox as an amateur free agent in 1955 and reached the majors on April 22, 1960, going 3-for-5 in an 11-inning win at Washington. His 1960 Topps card, a short-printed high number at #533, ranks among the set's recognized rookies. A right fielder with a strong arm, Clinton spent five seasons in Boston, batting .252 with 49 home runs, and authored two lasting Red Sox footnotes: he played right field on October 1, 1961, when Roger Maris's 61st home run cleared the wall just beyond his reach at Yankee Stadium, and on July 13, 1962, he hit for the cycle, going 5-for-7 in a 15-inning win at Kansas City. Traded to the Angels in 1964, he closed out an eight-year career with the Athletics, Indians, and Yankees, finishing with a .247 average, 65 homers, and 269 RBIs over 691 games. He died in 1997 at 60.
