1960 Topps #532 Mike Garcia

About Mike Garcia
Edward Miguel "Mike" García was born November 17, 1923, in San Gabriel, California. Signed by a Cleveland scout out of semipro ball in Tulare, he climbed through the Indians' system and made his major-league debut on October 3, 1948, just before Cleveland's pennant-winning stretch; as a September call-up he was ineligible to pitch in that year's World Series, which the Indians won. Teammate Joe Gordon hung on him the nickname "The Big Bear" for his broad build and close-cropped black hair. From 1949 through 1954, García anchored the Indians' famed "Big Four" rotation alongside Bob Feller, Bob Lemon, and Early Wynn, twice leading the American League in ERA (1949 and 1954) and making three straight All-Star teams (1952-54), with 20- and 22-win seasons in 1951 and 1952. He is the only member of that celebrated staff never elected to the Hall of Fame. Cleveland dealt him to the Chicago White Sox for 1960, the club pictured on this short-printed high-number card (#507-572) from the back of the set, and he closed his career with Washington in 1961, finishing 142-97 with a 3.27 ERA.
