About Sandy Amoros
Edmundo "Sandy" Amorós Isasi broke in with the Negro American League's New York Cubans in 1950 before Dodgers scout Al Campanis signed him in 1951, dazzling Brooklyn brass with what Campanis dubbed "Miracle Wrists" — surprising pop from a 5-foot-7 frame. The nickname "Sandy" stuck for his resemblance to boxing champion Sandy Saddler. A left-handed-hitting left fielder, Amorós debuted with Brooklyn on August 22, 1952, and from 1954-57 was a genuine offensive weapon, drawing enough walks to post on-base percentages as high as .399. His signature moment came in Game Seven of the 1955 World Series: entering as a defensive replacement, he raced down the line at Yankee Stadium to spear Yogi Berra's drive, then relayed through Pee Wee Reese to double off Gil McDougald, preserving Brooklyn's only championship. Amorós closed his seven-year career in 1960, splitting his final season between the Dodgers and the Tigers — the club pictured on his short-printed, high-number 1960 Topps card (#531, #507-572), issued during a Detroit stint of just 65 games. He hit .255 with 43 homers for his career and was inducted into the Cuban Baseball Hall of Fame in 1978.
