About Mike McCormick
Mike McCormick broke in with the New York Giants in 1956 as a $50,000 bonus-baby signee out of Mark Keppel High School in Alhambra, California, going straight to the majors at 17 without a day in the minors. The hard-throwing left-hander blossomed with the club after its move to San Francisco, leading the National League in ERA (2.70) in 1960 and earning All-Star honors that season and again in 1961 — the seasons that frame his short-printed high-number 1960 Topps card (#530, #507-572, one of the set's tougher pulls). Traded to Baltimore in 1963 and later to Washington, McCormick returned to the Giants in 1967 and authored a career year, going 22-10 to lead the NL in wins and capturing the Cy Young Award — the first Giants pitcher so honored. He pitched 16 big-league seasons for six clubs, finishing 134-128 with 1,321 strikeouts, and was later inducted into the San Francisco Giants Wall of Fame.
