1960 Topps #529 Norm Sherry

About Norm Sherry
Norm Sherry broke into pro ball in 1950, signed by the Brooklyn Dodgers out of Fairfax High School in Los Angeles, then spent seven years in the farm system and two in Army service before reaching the majors. The catcher debuted with the Los Angeles Dodgers in 1959 and backed up John Roseboro through 1962, occasionally catching his younger brother Larry Sherry, hero of the 1959 World Series. His 1960 Topps #529 card, a short-printed high number from the set's scarcest series (#507-572), captures his best big-league season: a .283 average with a career-high eight home runs. Sherry earned lasting notice in Dodgers lore on March 23, 1961, when his simple advice to a struggling Sandy Koufax — "Don't try to throw so hard" — is credited with launching Koufax's Hall of Fame turnaround. Sold to the Mets for 1963, his final season, Sherry went on to manage the California Angels in 1976-77 and coach for the Angels, Expos, Padres and Giants, mentoring a young Gary Carter into a Hall of Fame catcher in 1978.
