1960 Topps #528 Ben Johnson

About Ben Johnson
Ben Johnson's 1960 Topps card, #528 — a short-printed high number regarded as his rookie card — pictures him with the Chicago Cubs, the only club he pitched for in the majors. Born in Greenwood, South Carolina, the right-hander was a heralded schoolboy strikeout artist before signing with the Boston Braves for $6,000 in 1949. Two years of Marine Corps service during the Korean War and a rough 1954 spring trial with Milwaukee slowed his climb, but a 17-9, 3.22 ERA season for Triple-A Fort Worth in 1959 finally earned him a September call-up. He debuted with 5 2/3 innings of relief against Los Angeles, allowing just a solo homer, then made Chicago's 1960 Opening Day roster as a long reliever and picked up his first save against San Francisco and first win against Philadelphia. A June slump sent him down to Triple-A Houston for good; he finished 2-1, 3.91 in 21 career games and pitched in the minors through 1964.
