About Jose Valdivielso
A Cuban shortstop from Matanzas, José Martínez de Valdivielso was signed by Senators scout Joe Cambria and began his pro career in 1954 with Class-C Lubbock. He debuted with Washington on June 21, 1955, and as a rookie — despite a last-place finish — drew a single MVP vote. By 1960, the Senators' final season in Washington before the franchise became the Minnesota Twins, and the year pictured on his short-printed high-number 1960 Topps card #527, Valdivielso was the club's primary shortstop, starting 92 of a career-high 117 games before ceding the job late that year to fellow Cuban Zoilo Versalles. A glove-first infielder who hit .219 over five big-league seasons, he took part in the only all-Cuban triple play in major league history in 1961, a Camilo Pascual liner converted into outs by Julio Becquer and Valdivielso. He later worked in broadcasting and youth recreation and served on the MLB Players Alumni Association board for years. He died in 2025 at 90.
