1960 Topps #526 Paul Giel

About Paul Giel
Paul Giel reached the majors as one of the most celebrated amateurs in the country — a two-time All-American halfback at Minnesota and runner-up for the 1953 Heisman Trophy. He turned down NFL and CFL offers to sign with the New York Giants for a $60,000 bonus in 1954; under the era's bonus-baby rule, the deal kept him on the big-league roster with no minor-league seasoning. He debuted that July and was a spectator as the Giants swept Cleveland in that fall's World Series. After two years of military service, Giel became a journeyman reliever for the Giants, Pirates, Twins and Athletics. His 1960 Topps card, a short-printed high number (#507-572), catches him with Pittsburgh that season, when he went 2-0 in 16 relief outings before finishing the year in the minors; he retired in June 1961 after one final appearance with Kansas City. He closed his career 11-9 with a 5.39 ERA over six seasons. Giel later spent 18 years as Minnesota's athletic director and entered the College Football Hall of Fame in 1975.
