1960 Topps #538 Frank Barnes

About Frank Barnes
Frank Barnes broke into pro ball in 1947 with Indianapolis of the Negro American League, and in 1950 his contract was sold to the Yankees along with teammate Elston Howard, whom Barnes helped mentor as the younger man adjusted to integrated ball. After stops in the Browns and Toronto organizations, Barnes joined the Cardinals in 1956 and anchored their Omaha farm club, leading the American Association with a 2.41 ERA in 1957 and once reeling off 41⅓ consecutive scoreless innings. He pitched three seasons in St. Louis (1957-58, 1960), earning his only big-league win in relief against the Dodgers in 1958 and pinch-running for Stan Musial right after Musial's 3,000th career hit that May. The Cardinals sold Barnes to the White Sox on May 19, 1960, the move pictured on this short-printed high-number card - though he never appeared in a Chicago box score, closing his career in the minors and Mexico. It remains his only Topps card, a scarce rookie from the tough final series of the 1960 set.
