About Arnie Portocarrero
A New York City schoolboy sensation out of George Washington High School, Arnie Portocarrero struck out an average of 12 batters a game and went 29-0 while leading his team to two straight public-league titles, drawing scouts to his workouts near the Polo Grounds. He signed with the Philadelphia Athletics on August 1, 1949, then served two years in the Army during the Korean War before debuting in 1954, when the flame-throwing righty led the last-place A's in every pitching category. Arm trouble from winter ball in his father's native Puerto Rico slowed him afterward, but a trade to Baltimore for Bud Daley in April 1958 revived his career: he went 15-11 with a 3.25 ERA, threw three shutouts, and won five straight complete games that summer. This card catches him with the Orioles in what proved his final big-league season; he retired in 1961 with a 38-57 record, a 4.32 ERA, and 338 strikeouts over seven seasons.
