1960 Topps #253 Eddie Bressoud

About Eddie Bressoud
Eddie Bressoud signed with the New York Giants organization in 1950 out of Los Angeles' George Washington High School, then served two years in the Marine Corps during the Korean War before reaching the majors in June 1956, recalled to take over shortstop when Alvin Dark was traded to St. Louis. Pictured here with the San Francisco Giants, Bressoud became the club's primary shortstop in 1959 and 1960, helping fuel a tense 1959 pennant race in which San Francisco held first place into September before fading to third; writers credited his midseason emergence as a turning point. Unprotected by the Giants in the 1961 expansion draft, Bressoud became Houston's first-ever selection and was immediately flipped to the Red Sox for shortstop Don Buddin. Boston proved his best years: an injury to Luis Aparicio earned him a spot on the 1964 American League All-Star team, when he also posted a career-high .293 average. He closed his 12-year career with the 1967 World Series champion St. Louis Cardinals, then spent 24 years coaching baseball at De Anza College.
