About Ray Herbert
Ray Herbert broke in with his hometown Detroit Tigers in 1950, straight from Detroit Catholic Central High School, but a live sinking fastball outran his control and Korean War service interrupted his early years, leaving him a sub-.500 pitcher through the mid-1950s. The Athletics purchased his contract in May 1955, and after two more seasons in the minors he returned to Kansas City in 1958, settling in as the club's workhorse. His 1960 Topps card catches him in that stretch, his best season with the A's: a 14-15 record, 3.28 ERA and a career-high 252⅔ innings. Traded to the Chicago White Sox in June 1961, Herbert turned it around, going 48-32 over three-plus seasons. He peaked in 1962, winning 20 games and earning his only All-Star nod; picked to pitch that summer's second All-Star Game at Wrigley Field, he threw three scoreless relief innings and got the win as the AL topped the NL, 9-4. He closed his 14-year career with the Phillies in 1966 at 104-107, then threw batting practice for the Tigers for decades.
