1960 Topps #251 Bobby Malkmus

About Bobby Malkmus
Robert Edward Malkmus, a Newark, New Jersey native signed by Boston Braves scout John "Honey" Russell in 1951, played parts of six big-league seasons (1957–62) with the Braves, Senators, and Phillies as a light-hitting, slick-fielding utility infielder — teammates called him "Preacher," "Rev," and "Deacon" for the Bible he carried and the faith he discussed in the clubhouse. Selected by Philadelphia in the November 1959 Rule 5 draft, Malkmus appears on his 1960 Topps card (#251) from the season new manager Gene Mauch shuffled him around second, short, and third. On September 15, 1960 he hit his first big-league homer, a grand slam off the Giants' Sam Jones; the next night he made the final out — a come-backer off Warren Spahn's glove to shortstop Johnny Logan — in Spahn's first no-hitter. In 1961 he set career highs with seven homers and a .231 average, drawing an NL MVP vote, the only Phillie honored that year. He managed nine minor-league seasons and scouted into his 90s, dying in 2025 at 93.
