1970 Topps #498 Al Weis

About Al Weis
Weis spent 1970 as a defending World Series champion in a shrinking role: 75 games and 121 at-bats. He hit .207 with one home run and 11 RBI. He played 44 games at second base and 15 at shortstop, and his playing time dropped further in the second half once Tim Foli, a former first overall draft pick, was brought up to the Mets. Card #498 is a fifth-series number and pictures him with New York.
Albert John Weis, known to his teammates as Weasel, was a slender infielder who switch-hit for most of his career and played ten major league seasons for the Chicago White Sox and New York Mets between 1962 and 1971. Born in Franklin Square, New York, he grew up in Bethpage and graduated from Farmingdale High School in 1955. He joined the Navy at seventeen, and the White Sox spotted him on the base team at Naval Station Norfolk and signed him as an amateur free agent in 1959. Four seasons in the farm system produced a .266 average and a September call-up in 1962, and he settled in as Chicago's utility man behind second baseman Nellie Fox and shortstop Ron Hansen. Traded to the Mets in December 1967 with center fielder Tommie Agee, Weis was acquired by manager Gil Hodges chiefly for his glove. A career .219 hitter with seven home runs in 800 games, he hit .455 in the October 1969 World Series, leading both teams' regulars, and took the New York chapter of the Baseball Writers' Association of America's Babe Ruth Award as the Series' outstanding player. The Mets released him on July 1, 1971, and he and his wife, Barbara, raised their family in Elmhurst, Illinois.
