About Skip Lockwood

Lockwood went 6-2 at Double-A Elmira in 1969 and then pitched six games for Seattle from August 27, three of them starts. He went 0-1 with a 3.52 ERA, the loss a 2-1 decision to the White Sox. Topps continued to issue Seattle Pilots cards after the franchise became the Milwaukee Brewers, and fifth-series #499 is one of them. He joined the Brewers on May 10, 1970 and finished 5-12 with a 4.30 ERA in 26 starts.

Claude Edward Lockwood Jr., called Skip since he was two, signed with the Kansas City Athletics out of West Roxbury's Catholic Memorial High School in June 1964 - as a third baseman, despite going 22-2 on the mound in high school. When the Athletics slid a $35,000 contract across the table, the seventeen-year-old asked for the pen, wrote a 1 in front of the figure and handed it back; a phone call to owner Charlie Finley approved the $135,000. The bonus rule of the day parked him on the Kansas City bench for all of 1965, watching Ed Charles play third base and rooming with fellow bonus signee Catfish Hunter. After two more seasons in the minor leagues, the Athletics made him a pitcher, and Seattle took him in the 1968 expansion draft. He debuted on the mound for the Pilots in 1969, followed the franchise to Milwaukee, where he mostly started, and went to California in a nine-player trade. He pitched in relief for the New York Mets from 1975 through 1979, saving 19 games in 1976 and 20 in 1977. He finished with Boston in 1980. Off the field, he graduated cum laude from Emerson College in 1976 and added an MIT master's degree in 1983.
