1970 Topps #473 Don Bryant

About Don Bryant
Houston drafted Bryant at the winter meetings after he played winter ball in Venezuela, where his manager was Mel McGaha, then an Astros coach. His 1970 Topps card, #473 in the fifth series, gives the Seattle Pilots as his team. His 1970 season with Houston lasted 15 games, 24 at-bats and a .208 average, ending with his final game on July 29. Boston acquired him that December.
Don Bryant was a 6-foot-5 catcher who spent parts of three seasons in the majors after signing with the Detroit Tigers organization in 1959. He worked his way through the minors for seven seasons, developing a reputation as a strong game-caller, before Detroit dealt him to the Chicago Cubs, who called him up in July 1966. Bryant later moved through the San Francisco Giants organization and on to the Houston Astros, catching Don Wilson's no-hitter against Cincinnati on May 1, 1969, and hitting his only career home run two days after that. Teammates nicknamed him "Bear" in homage to Alabama football coach Paul "Bear" Bryant. He closed his playing days with Boston's Triple-A Pawtucket club, then stayed with the Red Sox as a coach, serving on the pennant-winning 1975 staff, and later coached for the Seattle Mariners. A barber in the offseason throughout his career, he eventually returned to that trade full-time. He finished his major-league career with a .220 average and 24 hits in 59 games.
