About Ted Kubiak

Ted Kubiak hit his first major league home run on June 22, 1969, off Minnesota's Jim Kaat, and finished that year with 2 homers and 27 RBI in 92 games. On December 7, 1969, Oakland sent him and pitcher George Lauzerique to the Seattle Pilots for Ray Oyler and Diego Segui. His 1970 Topps card, #688, is a high number from the seventh series and lists him with Seattle.

Ted Kubiak was a switch-hitting, glove-first infielder who spent ten major league seasons, 1967 to 1976, with the Kansas City/Oakland Athletics, Milwaukee Brewers, St. Louis Cardinals, Texas Rangers, and San Diego Padres. Signed by Kansas City in 1960 out of Highland Park, New Jersey, he spent six years in the minors before debuting in 1967. He played shortstop, second base, and third base, filling in wherever a regular went down, which led teammate Tony La Russa to call him the most valuable player on Oakland's early-1970s club. Kubiak hit .231 with 13 home runs across 977 career games and played for the Athletics' 1972 and 1973 World Series champions. After retiring as a player in 1977, he returned to baseball in 1989 as a minor league manager and later a defensive instructor in the Cleveland organization.

Why does this card say Seattle Pilots?

Because the card prints the Seattle Pilots, and it is correct as printed: the franchise played the 1970 season as the Milwaukee Brewers, but thirty 1970 Topps cards print the Pilots - the #713 team card, #556 Dave Bristol's manager card, the #88 Pilots Rookie Stars and twenty-seven player cards. 1970 Topps is the second and last Topps flagship set with Seattle Pilots cards.

Why is #688 harder to find?

It is a high number card from the seventh and last series, #634-720 - the high numbers, and the toughest series of the set to find.
