1971 Topps #320 Dave McNally

About Dave McNally
A sore arm kept McNally out for six weeks in July and August 1971, yet he became the first of the 1971 Orioles' four 20-game winners to reach 20 when he shut out the Yankees on September 21, finishing 21-5 with a 2.89 ERA. In the World Series he beat Pittsburgh in Game 1 and won Game 6 in relief. Card #69, from the first series, is the League Leaders card he shares with Mike Cuellar and Jim Perry, who tied him at 24 wins in 1970; #320 is his own third-series card, with Baltimore.
Dave McNally was a left-handed pitcher who spent all but the final season of a fourteen-year career with the Baltimore Orioles, signed out of Billings, Montana in 1960 and debuting September 26, 1962 with a two-hit shutout of Kansas City. He won 20 or more games four straight years, 1968 through 1971; the 1971 Orioles, with Jim Palmer, Mike Cuellar and Pat Dobson, remain the last team to field four 20-game winners. A three-time All-Star (1969, 1970, 1972), he clinched the 1966 World Series sweep with a four-hit shutout of the Dodgers and, in 1970, became the only pitcher in major-league history to hit a World Series grand slam, off Cincinnati's Wayne Granger. He finished 184-119 with a 3.24 ERA and 1,512 strikeouts. Retired in June 1975 with the Expos, he lent his name to the grievance arbitrator Peter Seitz decided that December, breaking baseball's reserve clause. Baltimore put him in its team Hall of Fame in 1978; he died of cancer in his native Billings on December 1, 2002.
