About Earl Weaver
Baltimore went 101-57 under Weaver in 1971 and took a third straight American League pennant. The staff had four 20-game winners, and the Orioles swept Oakland in the playoffs before Pittsburgh won the World Series in seven games. Topps carried him on manager card #477 in the fourth series.
Earl Weaver managed the Baltimore Orioles from July 1968 through 1982 and again in 1985-1986, compiling a 1,480-1,060 record. He played second base in the minors from 1948 to 1960 and began managing as a player-manager in 1956. After two winning seasons at Triple-A Rochester, he joined Baltimore as first-base coach and replaced Hank Bauer as manager on July 11, 1968. Weaver kept cards and notebooks recording how individual hitters fared against particular pitchers, using those matchups to set his lineups. He also platooned Gary Roenicke and John Lowenstein in left field. Known as the Earl of Baltimore, he was ejected 94 times during his major league managerial career. The Veterans Committee elected him to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1996.
