About George Medich
George Francis "Doc" Medich broke into pro ball as a 30th-round pick of the New York Yankees in 1970, out of the University of Pittsburgh, where he had also played tight end for the Panthers football team. The 6-foot-5 right-hander earned his nickname while pursuing his medical degree at Pitt's School of Medicine, and reached the majors in September 1972. His 1973 season - 14-9 with a 2.95 ERA - placed him third in American League Rookie of the Year voting, and he was the winning pitcher in the last Yankees victory at the original Yankee Stadium that September. This 1975 Topps card catches him in his final Yankees season, coming off a career-high 19 wins in 1974 and a 16-16, 3.50 ERA follow-up; that December he was traded to Pittsburgh in the deal that brought Willie Randolph to New York. Medich pitched until 1982, finishing 124-105 with 955 strikeouts across seven teams, then practiced medicine, twice reviving fans who suffered heart attacks in the stands.
