About Clarence Gaston

A rangy outfielder out of San Antonio, Texas, Clarence "Cito" Gaston broke in with the Atlanta Braves in 1967, was claimed by the expansion San Diego Padres for 1969, and returned to Atlanta in 1975, the club pictured on this card. His signature season came in 1970 with San Diego: a .318 average, 29 home runs and 93 RBI earned him his only All-Star selection and stood as the highest batting average by a Padre before Tony Gwynn arrived. Gaston also won two batting titles playing winter ball in Venezuela. His nickname traces to a San Antonio friend, Carlos Thompson, who thought the young ballplayer resembled a Mexican professional wrestler who went by "Cito." Gaston's greater fame came after his playing days: as Toronto's hitting coach and then manager starting in 1989, he led the Blue Jays to four AL East titles and, in 1992 and 1993, back-to-back World Series championships, becoming the first African-American manager to win a title. He was inducted into the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame in 2002.
