1979 Topps #683 Dan Meyer

About Dan Meyer
Number 683 comes from the year Meyer moved back to third base and hit .278 with 20 home runs and 74 RBIs. He played 144 games, 101 of them at third. He credited the position change for his June surge, which made him the first Mariner named American League Player of the Month. He ranked third in the league in at-bats per strikeout.
Dan Meyer was a left-handed-hitting first baseman and outfielder who played 12 major league seasons, 1974 to 1985, for the Tigers, Mariners and Athletics. Born in Hamilton, Ohio, he attended Mater Dei High School in Santa Ana and played at Santa Ana College. He was a fourth-round Detroit pick in 1972 and led the Appalachian League with a .396 average that summer. He debuted on September 14, 1974, and on September 20 he homered twice against Milwaukee in the game in which he got his first hit. Seattle took him ninth overall in the 1976 expansion draft, and he was at first base for the franchise's first game. He led the Mariners in hits and RBIs in 1977, and a 21-game hitting streak in 1979 stood as the club record until 1997. His 64 home runs as a Mariner were the franchise record until Dave Henderson passed him in 1985. Seattle traded him to Oakland for reliever Rich Bordi in December 1981, and he closed out his big league career there. He hit .253 with 86 home runs in 1,118 games and later played in Mexico and the Senior Professional Baseball Association.
