1979 Topps #628 Del Unser

About Del Unser
Unser's 1978 with Montreal covered 130 games and 179 at-bats. He hit .196 with 2 home runs and 15 RBI. He played 64 games at first base and 33 in the outfield. He became a free agent that winter and returned to the Phillies. His 1979 Topps card, #628, still shows him with the Expos. Back in Philadelphia he hit .298 with 6 home runs and 29 RBI.
Del Unser was a lefty-hitting outfielder who spent 15 seasons in the majors from 1968 to 1982, breaking in with the Washington Senators and finishing second in AL Rookie of the Year voting his first year. He later played for the Cleveland Indians, Philadelphia Phillies, New York Mets and Montreal Expos, moving among those clubs in a string of trades. Unser led the American League in triples in 1969 and finished his career with 1,799 games, 1,344 hits and 87 home runs. He played a part in the Phillies' 1980 World Series championship, driving in runs with pinch-hit doubles in Games 2 and 5 against the Kansas City Royals. Unser's father, Al Unser, played in the majors and also managed and scouted, and Del followed a similar path after his playing days, working for the Phillies as a coach, farm director and scout. His college play at Mississippi State earned him induction into the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame in 1997.
