1979 Topps #548 Enrique Romo

About Enrique Romo
An 11-7 record, 3.69 ERA and 10 saves marked Romo's 1978 Seattle season. His 1979 Topps #548 retained the Mariners name after Pittsburgh acquired him from Seattle in a December 5, 1978 trade. He appeared in 84 games for the Pirates in 1979, pitching 129 1/3 innings.
Enrique Romo pitched 6 major league seasons with Seattle and Pittsburgh, relying on a screwball, changing speeds and varied arm angles. The right-hander spent 11 years in Mexican professional baseball before joining the expansion Mariners in 1977 at age 29. His older brother Vicente also pitched in the majors. Romo had won 20 games with a 1.89 ERA for Mexico City in 1976, striking out 239 batters in 233 innings. He later worked in Pittsburgh's bullpen during its 1979 championship season. His major league totals were 44 wins, 52 saves and a 3.45 ERA in 350 pitching appearances. The Mexican Baseball Hall of Fame inducted him in 2003.
