1979 Topps #520 Gary Carter

About Gary Carter
Carter's .283 average in 1979 came with 22 home runs and 75 RBIs. He caught 138 of his 140 games for Montreal that season and was named to the National League All-Star team. His card in that year's Topps set is #520, with the Expos.
Gary Carter was a catcher for 19 major league seasons, 12 of them with the Montreal Expos, and the first Hall of Famer whose plaque shows an Expos cap. The Expos drafted him in the third round in 1972 out of Sunny Hills High School in Fullerton, California, after he had signed a letter of intent to play quarterback at UCLA, and converted him to catcher in the minors. He reached Montreal in September 1974, made the first of 11 All-Star teams as a rookie in 1975, and became the Expos' everyday catcher in 1977. He won Gold Gloves from 1980 to 1982 and finished second to Mike Schmidt in the 1980 NL MVP vote. A December 1984 trade sent him to the New York Mets, where he drove in 100 runs in 1985 and helped win the 1986 World Series, hitting two home runs in Game 4 against Boston. Released by the Mets in November 1989, he played for San Francisco and Los Angeles, then closed out in Montreal in 1992 with 324 home runs, 1,225 RBIs and a .262 career average. He died in 2012 at age 57.
