1979 Topps #677 Larry Parrish

About Larry Parrish
Parrish played much of 1979 on sore wrists and wore a cast on one of them for several weeks after the season ended. Montreal, which had never before reached .500, went 95-65 and came within two games of the National League East title. Parrish was named Expos Player of the Year. At a Montreal dinner that winter, Pittsburgh manager Chuck Tanner said Parrish deserved to be the Expos' MVP and had not even gotten good yet. His card that year, #677, shows him with the Expos.
Larry Parrish was a third baseman, later an outfielder and first baseman, who played 15 major league seasons from 1974 to 1988, most of them with the Montreal Expos and the Texas Rangers. Signed out of Seminole Junior College by Expos scout Mel Didier, he became the club's regular third baseman in 1975 and tied for third in National League Rookie of the Year voting. His best year was 1979, when he hit .307 with 30 home runs and 82 RBI, made the All-Star team and finished fourth in MVP voting. He is the only Expo to hit three home runs in a game on three occasions. Traded to Texas for Al Oliver on March 31, 1982, he hit three grand slams in one week that season, made a second All-Star team in 1987, and finished his American career with Boston in 1988. He played two more years in Japan with Yakult and Hanshin. Parrish retired with a .263 average, 256 home runs and 992 RBI in the majors. He then managed in the Tigers organization, led Detroit in 1998 and 1999, and won back-to-back Governors' Cup titles with the Toledo Mud Hens in 2005 and 2006. The International League Hall of Fame inducted him as a manager in 2013.
