1979 Topps #666 Rich Dauer

About Rich Dauer
Dauer hit a career-high nine home runs and drove in 61 in 1979 as the Orioles won the AL East and beat California in the ALCS. In Game 7 of the World Series his third-inning home run gave Baltimore an early lead, but Pittsburgh took the Series 4-3. He hit .257 over 142 games. His #666 card carries the Orioles.
Rich Dauer spent all ten of his major league seasons with the Baltimore Orioles, a sure-handed second baseman who also filled in at third. A first-round pick out of Southern California in 1974 (24th overall), he had won College World Series titles with the Trojans in 1973 and 1974. He debuted on September 11, 1976, with a single in his first at-bat, played 1,140 games, and batted .257 before his final game on September 29, 1985. Jim Palmer gave him the nickname Wacko for his sense of humor, and in 1983 Ken Singleton cast him as Larry beside Todd Cruz and Rick Dempsey in the Orioles' Three Stooges bottom of the order. Baltimore won that year's World Series. As a coach he spent 19 seasons in the majors with several clubs, finishing as first base coach of the 2017 World Series champion Astros. He also managed San Antonio to the 2013 Texas League title and entered the Orioles Hall of Fame in 2012. He died on February 3, 2025.
