About Jim Pyburn
A two-sport star at Auburn, Jim Pyburn was an All-SEC end who set a school record for single-season receiving yards and a third baseman who hit .432 and then .455 for the Tigers. He signed with the Baltimore Orioles for a reported $30,000 bonus, and as a "bonus baby" had to stay on the 25-man big-league roster for his first two professional seasons, with manager Paul Richards abruptly shifting the young infielder to the outfield. Pyburn played 158 games for Baltimore from 1955 to 1957, batting .190 with 3 home runs; his busiest year was 1956, when 64 of his 84 games came in center field. Drafted by the NFL's Washington Redskins in 1956, he stuck with baseball until retiring after 1958, then coached defense under Vince Dooley at Georgia from 1964 to 1979 and entered the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame in 2000. His Topps rookie card, from the scarce fourth series, appeared the same season his major-league career ended.
