About Charlie Neal
Charlie Neal signed with the Brooklyn Dodgers organization in 1950 after playing for the Negro Southern League's Atlanta Black Crackers, and reached the majors in 1956. A speedy 165-pound infielder prized for his double-play pivot, he took over shortstop from Pee Wee Reese in 1957 and moved to second base full-time once the club shifted to Los Angeles, where he delivered the first hit in Los Angeles Dodgers history. His finest season came in 1959: an All-Star and NL triples leader who won a Gold Glove at second, he hit .287 with 19 home runs, then starred in the World Series against Chicago, batting .370 with two home runs — both off Bob Shaw in Game 2 — that swung the Series toward the Dodgers' championship. Neal made a second straight All-Star team in 1960, the year pictured on both his base Topps card and the short-printed high-number Sport Magazine '60 All-Star insert. Traded to the expansion Mets in 1962, he drove in the first run in franchise history before finishing his career with Cincinnati in 1963.
