About Gil Hodges
Gilbert Raymond Hodges signed with Brooklyn out of St. Joseph's College in 1943, debuted that October, then served in the Marine Corps as an anti-aircraft gunner at Tinian and Okinawa, earning a Bronze Star for valor. Back in 1947 he converted from catcher to first base, anchoring Brooklyn's "Boys of Summer" infield through six pennants and titles in 1955 and 1959. Known as the "Gentle Giant" for his size and even temper, the eight-time All-Star won the first three Gold Gloves ever awarded at first base (1957-59) and retired with 370 home runs, then an NL record for a right-hander. Brooklyn fans loved him best during an 0-for-21 slump in the 1952 World Series, flooding him with letters and rosaries instead of boos - a priest famously told his congregation to "say a prayer for Gil Hodges." His #295 1960 Topps card catches him in an injury-slowed final stretch as a Dodger before he closed his career with the expansion Mets. He went on to manage Washington, then led the 1969 "Miracle Mets" to their first championship, and died of a heart attack in 1972, two days short of his 48th birthday. The Hall of Fame inducted him in 2022.
