1960 Topps #276 Ken McBride

About Ken McBride
Ken McBride's card shows him with the White Sox in 1960, but the Alabama-born right-hander made his mark two seasons later on the other coast. Signed by the Red Sox for a $500 bonus in 1953, he spent six years in Boston's system before Chicago purchased his contract in August 1959, debuting that August 4 against Baltimore and working 16 games for the White Sox over two seasons. Left unprotected in the 1960 expansion draft, McBride became the Los Angeles Angels' seventh pick and anchored their rotation from 1961-1963, winning 36 games with seven shutouts and earning three straight American League All-Star selections. He started the 1963 All-Star Game in his hometown of Cleveland, working three innings against a National League lineup featuring Willie Mays and Hank Aaron. An arm injury in 1964 ended his effectiveness; he retired after 1965 with a 40-50 record and 3.79 ERA. His 1960 Topps #276, issued during his brief White Sox tenure, is recognized as his rookie card.
