About Curt Flood
Curt Flood's 1960 Topps card catches him early in a 15-year career, a St. Louis Cardinals outfielder still three years from the first of seven straight Gold Gloves. Signed by the Cincinnati Redlegs in 1956 and traded to St. Louis in December 1957, Flood struggled at the plate through 1960 before breaking out under manager Johnny Keane in 1961. He developed into a three-time All-Star (1964, 1966, 1968) and one of the game's finest defensive center fielders, leading the National League in hits with 211 in 1964 and posting a .335 average in 1967. Flood helped St. Louis win World Series titles in 1964 and 1967 and a pennant in 1968. His greatest impact came off the field: after being traded to Philadelphia following the 1969 season, he refused to report and sued Major League Baseball over the reserve clause. Flood v. Kuhn reached the Supreme Court, which ruled against him 5-3 in 1972, but his stand helped pave the way for the free agency other players won in 1975. He finished with a .293 average, 1,861 hits, and 636 RBI.
