About Tom Acker
Thomas James Acker was born March 7, 1930, in Paterson, New Jersey, and pitched Fair Lawn High School to state championships before signing with the New York Giants in 1948. He worked through the low minors, was traded to the Reds organization in 1951, then lost the 1952-53 seasons to the U.S. Army. Acker reached Cincinnati in 1956 as a right-handed reliever and had his best year in 1957, appearing in 49 games — ninth-most in the National League — while going 10-5. He threw the only shutout of his career, blanking the Phillies on September 19, 1956. Over four seasons with the Redlegs he went 19-13 with a 4.12 ERA and 256 strikeouts. That November the Reds traded him to the Kansas City Athletics for Frank House, the deal pictured on his 1960 Topps card — but Acker never pitched for Kansas City in the majors, assigned instead to Richmond and released rather than uproot his family for a further minor-league move.
