1960 Topps #273 Neil Chrisley

About Neil Chrisley
Born Barbra O'Neil Chrisley in Calhoun Falls, South Carolina, the 6-foot-3 outfielder played under his middle name, Neil, in a career that began after he signed with the Red Sox in 1950 out of Newberry College. Boston sent him to Washington in a November 1955 multi-player trade, and he debuted with the Senators on April 15, 1957, singling as a pinch hitter against Baltimore. Detroit acquired him on December 6, 1958, with Rocky Bridges and Eddie Yost, for Reno Bertoia, Ron Samford and Jim Delsing — the club pictured on his 1960 Topps card, #273. That 1960 season was his best: a .255 average with 5 home runs and 24 RBI in 96 games, including a double off Bill Monbouquette that stood as Detroit's only hit in a one-hitter. Used mainly as a pinch hitter and reserve outfielder across five big-league seasons with Washington, Detroit and Milwaukee, he hit .210 with 16 homers in 302 games. Traded to the Braves after 1960, he played his last season in 1961, later worked in insurance in South Carolina, and died in 2013 at age 81.
