About Fred Green

Fred Allen Green starred in three sports at Titusville High School in New Jersey before the Pirates signed the left-hander in 1952, part of Branch Rickey's youth-scouting wave jokingly called "Rickey's Dinks." After climbing Pittsburgh's farm system and a two-year Army stint, the 6-foot-4 southpaw reached the majors for good in 1959. His best year was 1960: career highs of 45 appearances, an 8-4 record, three saves and a 3.21 ERA out of the bullpen as the Pirates won the pennant. That July, The Sporting News called Green and closer Roy Face the National League's best bullpen combination, and after the season Green made the paper's 1960 All-Star Rookie team — the honor marked on his Topps rookie card. Pittsburgh's stunning World Series upset of the Yankees remains his career highlight, even though he was hit hard in three relief outings, twice victimized by Mickey Mantle homers. He later pitched for Washington before closing his career with the Pirates in 1964.
