About Harry Bright
Kansas City-born Harry Bright signed at 16 as a catching prospect for Yankees scout Bill Essick, then spent a dozen minor-league seasons bouncing through 14 farm clubs, hitting .413 for Clovis in 1950 and later managing the Janesville Cubs as the youngest playing manager in Organized Baseball. Card #277 catches him posed at Wrigley Field wearing a Cubs cap, a snapshot from the winter Chicago had drafted him away from Pittsburgh, only for the Pirates to reclaim him before Opening Day 1960. Bright had actually debuted two years earlier, in July 1958, and found his best seasons as a first baseman for the expansion Washington Senators, batting .273 with 17 homers in 1962. Traded to Cincinnati and sold to the pennant-winning 1963 Yankees, he reached his only World Series that October and became a footnote by taking Sandy Koufax's record fifteenth strikeout in Game One. He finally wore a Cubs uniform for real in 1965, closing an eight-year, five-team career at .255 with 32 homers and 126 RBI, then managed in the minors and scouted for the Expos.
