1960 Topps #278 Stan Williams

About Stan Williams
Stan Williams broke in with the Los Angeles Dodgers in 1958, their first season on the West Coast, joining a young staff built around Don Drysdale, Sandy Koufax, and Johnny Podres. The 6-foot-5, 230-pound right-hander out of Denver's East High School, signed by the Dodgers in 1954, threw hard but wild, walking nearly as many batters as he struck out in his early seasons. In the 1959 NL playoff against Milwaukee, he threw three scoreless innings in relief to win the pennant-clinching game, then helped Los Angeles beat the White Sox in the World Series. An All-Star in 1960, the year of this card, Williams struck out 205 batters the following season, second in the league only to teammate Koufax. Opponents, including Hank Aaron, knew him as the "Big Hurt" for his willingness to pitch inside. Williams spent 14 seasons with six clubs before a long run as a pitching coach, adding a second championship ring with the 1990 Reds.
