1960 Topps #279 Chuck Tanner

About Chuck Tanner
Card #279 in the 1960 Topps set catches Chuck Tanner with the Cleveland Indians, who purchased him from the Red Sox organization in September 1959 and used him in 14 games that fall and 21 more in 1960. A left-handed hitting outfielder out of New Castle, Pennsylvania, Tanner reached the majors in 1955 with the Milwaukee Braves and delivered one of the game's great debuts, pinch-hitting a home run on the first big-league pitch he ever saw. He played for the Braves, Cubs, Indians and Angels through 1962, batting .261 with 21 homers and 105 RBIs in 396 games. Tanner's lasting fame came as a manager, where his relentless optimism earned him the nickname "Mr. Sunshine." He won more than 1,350 games piloting the White Sox, A's, Pirates and Braves, and in 1979 led his hometown Pirates and the "We Are Family" clubhouse to a World Series title, rallying from a three-games-to-one deficit to beat Baltimore.
