About Frank Sullivan
Franklin Leal Sullivan was born January 23, 1930, in Hollywood, growing up in nearby Burbank, where he passed on a Stanford basketball scholarship to sign with the Red Sox in 1948. His development stalled when Army combat duty in Korea earned him the Combat Infantryman Badge. Sullivan debuted with Boston on July 31, 1953, and became a full-time starter in 1954, going 15-12. In 1955 he made the first of two straight All-Star teams, leading the AL in innings pitched (260) and tying Whitey Ford for the league lead with 18 wins; that July he held the NL scoreless for 3⅓ innings in the All-Star Game before Stan Musial's walk-off homer ended it in the 12th. At 6-foot-7, writers dubbed him "the Boston Skyscraper," and in 1957 he posed with teammates Sammy White and Jackie Jensen for Norman Rockwell's Saturday Evening Post cover "The Rookie." His 1960 Topps card #280 captures his eighth and final Boston season — that winter the Red Sox traded him to Philadelphia for fellow giant Gene Conley. Sullivan finished 97-100 with a 3.60 ERA over 11 seasons and entered the Red Sox Hall of Fame in 2008.
