About Ray Boone
Ray Boone signed with Cleveland in 1942, served three years in the Navy during World War II, and broke into the majors as a shortstop in 1948, earning a World Series ring when the Indians beat the Boston Braves that fall. Traded to Detroit in 1953, he moved to third base and became one of the American League's most feared run producers, making back-to-back All-Star teams in 1954 and 1956 and leading the league with 116 RBIs in 1955. That first season in Detroit he hit four grand slams, including one against the Browns for each of his two 1953 clubs — a feat no one matched until Mike Piazza in 1998. After stops with the White Sox and Athletics, Boone was claimed by the Milwaukee Braves in 1959, appearing in 20 games for the club, as pictured on this 1960 Topps #281, before a May 1960 trade to Boston and back surgery that August ended his playing career. He scouted for the Red Sox for three decades. A descendant of frontiersman Daniel Boone, Ray became patriarch of the game's first three-generation All-Star family: son Bob caught 19 seasons, and grandsons Bret and Aaron both made All-Star teams too.
