About Joe Nuxhall

Joe Nuxhall's 1960 Topps card, #282, shows him with the Cincinnati Reds late in a career built on one of the sport's great pieces of trivia: he remains the youngest player ever to appear in a major league game. On June 10, 1944, with rosters depleted by World War II, the Reds put the 15-year-old on the mound in relief against the pennant-bound St. Louis Cardinals; he retired the first batter he faced, then walked five and allowed five runs before being pulled. Nuxhall spent the next eight years rebuilding himself in the minors before returning to Cincinnati for good in 1952. He became a fixture in the Reds' rotation and bullpen through 1966, making the National League All-Star team in 1955 and 1956 and leading the league in shutouts in 1955. Long known as "The Ol' Lefthander" for outlasting his improbable teenage start, he finished 135-117 with a 3.90 ERA and 1,372 strikeouts. Nuxhall went straight from the mound to the broadcast booth, calling Reds games for 40 years, right up until his death in 2007.
